Small Changes make Big Impacts: A plan for a healthier 2016

As yet another year comes to a close, I feel grateful for what I have – food, shelter and a wonderful family who put up with my many idiosyncrasies. I wonder though – how did I do ? How did I measure up to the personal goals I had set for 2015 ? I posted as regularly as I had wanted to (yay!) but overall for someone who does project management for living and plans and plans all day, I can be better at planning my personal life…! here goes…Identifying the problem is the first step, right? that’s one step in the right direction. The next step is to find out what I want to accomplish in 2016. That is actually easy for me because it’s constantly at the back of my mind, but it is never prioritized and that one key goal I want to meet is taking better care of myself. Ask my mom and she will tell you that a person who will not take care of herself cannot do a good job of taking care of someone elseYou know what, moms are always right even though we fight that notion until we become parents..ah what a cliche! So, this new year it will be all about making small changes because  ‘Little by little, a little becomes A LOT’, isn’t it?

Here are my thoughts on how I could get healthier in 2016. I have been following these mantras to some extent after I read this book –  Don’t lose your mind, Lose your weight by Rujuta Diwekar but not consistently. But for the new year, consistency is going to be the king or should I say ‘key’? They’ve could’ve said “consistency is queen” and maybe I’d have lived with that 🙂

  1. Eating breakfast within an hour of waking up. NEVER skipping breakfast.
  2. Eat 100% whole grain products where the first ingredient is whole grain.  We are what we eat after all.
  3. Drink LOTS of water and keeping hydrated.
  4. Eat every 2 hours.
  5. Eat my last meal 2 hours before I go to bed
  6. {Most Important One} Learn when to stop eating – I may crave for more but it is important to learn to listen to my stomach and stop when I am 3/4th full.
  7. No processed foods. Always follow the 5 ingredient rule (Don’t eat any packaged food with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can’t pronounce).
  8. Limit sweets to once a week.
  9. Limit deep fried foods to once every fortnight.
  10. Exercise at least for 180 minutes a week.

I am feeling very accomplished already :). I know what I want to do but now I have to think through how I can get all of this done.  Actually the answer is pretty simple –  to get anything done in life you need to plan for it because a goal without a plan is just a wish!

So here’s my plan –  The main reason I sometimes tend to skip breakfast is because I have not planned for it! I realized that’s one small change I need to make that will trigger all the other positive changes in life that will help me meet my goals. In order to that, I have decided that I will plan for my meals in advance. No more starting the day without knowing what’s going to be our lunch / dinner and trying to figure all that out at 5.45 in the morning! So look out for my next post where I share all the details on how I intend to have a “weekly meal plan”. I am so excited that I can’t wait to share my plan but I’m working through the final details and as soon as it is done, you shall have it!

I will leave you with one last thought, if you lead a busy life with no time to spare and you think eating healthy or cooking healthy meals at home is not possible, I am here to convince you that it is all about making time for what matters – you and your family. As far as getting into an exercise routine is concerned, find something you like be it yoga, pilates or weight training. It is important to find something you enjoy doing it. Lately, I have been following yoga videos at Daily Burn. Check them out, they have a free 30 day trial.

So that wraps up my plan on making healthy changes in 2016. I will keep you posted on how my life has changed having followed these steps consistently. Meanwhile, I would love to hear what your goals are. Please share your comments ! Wish all of you reading this and your loved ones a Healthy, Happy and Joyous 2016.
