Healthy Banana Apple Smoothie

My mom would often blend apple and milk together to make us what we called at that time a milkshake (it was actually a smoothie). This was at a time when milkshakes were not very common in India so I was pretty impressed with my mom because this drink was so damn delicious. She used to add a bit of sugar but my recipe for apple smoothie does not.

This apple banana smoothie is also inspired by mom’s recipe but with one change – the addition of bananas. Bananas are loaded with potassium and magnesium making it heart-healthy. Not to mention the fact that it also makes the smoothie creamier and even more delicious!

How to make apple banana smoothie

With some fresh apples and bananas, you can make this fruit and milk-based smoothie in your kitchen in no time. This recipe calls for dates instead of sugar making it a healthy drink that you can have any time of the day. It is a great alternative to store-bought juices and makes for a filling snack/drink after school.

Ingredients

  • Key Ingredients – apple, banana
  • Liquid – Whole milk or almond milk
  • Sweetener – Dates or Honey or Maple Syrup
  • Optional add-ons – Nut butter such as cashew butter, almond butter, and peanut butter

Instructions

The recipe is quite simple – add all the ingredients to the blender and blend it until smooth.  Serve it as is or use less milk to make a smoothie bowl. I love to garnish my smoothie with chopped bananas and granola.

Notes / variations

  1. Fuji and red delicious apples are the perfect choices for this smoothie because they break down easily and are also sweet.
  2. The amount of liquid you add depends on the consistency you want. You can reduce the milk to 1/2 a cup and use this recipe to make a smoothie bowl. Serve it with chopped bananas and granola.
  3. Add a couple of tablespoons of oats to make this smoothie even more filling.
  4. For best results, use ripe bananas since they tend to be sweeter than the unripe ones.
  5. I like to add a teaspoon of cacao nibs for flavor and color but you can totally skip that.

  1. Is it healthier to use curd instead of milk though milk smoothies are tastier but curd is more compatible. Please let me know.

    1. Hi! Anu – curd is definitely better for your gut than milk but my kids don’t like the sour taste so I always use milk. If you don’t mind the tartness, go for it.
